Birthday bash: Thu Aug 16 - Nelson

Published: 10:00AM Thursday August 16, 2007

Breakfast came to you on Thursday from the Nelson Yacht Club - the oldest yacht club in the country, celebrating its 150th birthday this year.

Nelson Mayor Paul Matheson has been in the job for nine years. He spoke to Breakfast about the many changes he has seen during his time running the city.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food producing industry in the country and worth over $300 million to New Zealand's economy. And much of it is based in the Nelson region. Its production includes mussels, salmon and oysters - much of which was on the Breakfast BBQ on Thursday morning. The BBQ was organised by Mike Burrell, chief executive of Aquaculture New Zealand.

Paul got some tips on the art of glass blowing from Anthony Genet of the Flame Daisy Glass Studio.

We looked back at some more memories of the 10 years of Breakfast and spoke to paul Henry's first co-host Ali Mau. Apart from television, Ali's other love is horse riding and she joined the show from Pukekohe where she was out riding.

Nelson locals are currently preparing for their spring arts festival. Angela Moriarty from Latitude Nelson, which promotes the region, told Breakfast all about the festival.

Ross Richards fell in love with pottery nearly 35 years ago while at teachers college and decided to become a potter rather than a teacher. He told Breakfast how it's done.

Local jeweller Halfdan Hansen, whose  team were the original designers, editors and creators of the One Ring that featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, popped in for a chat.

Some unusual events have happened on breakfast over the past 10 years. In the very early days Matt Ruys proposed to his girlfriend Anathea live on the show.

The Breakfast team did a bit of detective work and managed to find Matt and Anathea.

Mike Ward is a local Nelson identity best known as an incredibly fit endurance racer. He is the only person to complete all 25 Coast to Coast races. Now he's running for mayor.

The team from the Rutherford Hotel's Miyazu Restaurant taught the Breakfast team how to make sushi.

Ian Shaw, President of the Nelson Volunteer Coastguard spoke to Breakfast about the work his team carries out.

Winner of the Two to Tango trip to the Nelson Arts Festival - James Bruce of Havelock North
