Douglas Myers is best known as the hard-nosed boss of
Lion Nathan and the head of the Business Roundtable during the
economic reforms of the 1980s. But as TVNZ's Sunday programme found
out - in a rare interview - he is a man of many talents
Myers occupation is now listed on the NBR rich list as
philanthropist and though he may be in semi-retirement he still has
an eye for a business deal.
He gives $200,000 annually for a student to go to Cambridge
University and a scholarship for teachers from Kings College to
study abroad. He's given Auckland University $1 million for a new
business school and $1.5 million for a performing arts centre named
after his father. And at 69 the former beer baron entered the music
business, bankrolling one of the biggest hits in the world last
year Crazy by Gnarls Barkley.
