A popular charity race is tightening its rules after several competitors were found to be travelling well over the speed limit.

Organisers of the $10 Auckland to Queenstown Cur Kids Charity race only discovered the speeding after GPS readings were posted on a website.

It is a major fundraiser with 25 teams racing from Auckland to Queenstown with just $10 in their pocket, hitching rides along the way.

But the GPS tracking system, ensuring their safety, reveals some competitors being driven in cars at unsafe speeds, at times reaching up to 140 kilometres an hour.

The race raised over $280,000 for Cure Kids. The charity says it only discovered the vehicle speeds after the race and was shocked to hear about them.
