New Zealand Post says kapa haka stamps that have become collectors items are an embarrassing mistake.

The cartoon-style stamps, due to be released nationally in May, were recalled after complaints from some Maori groups.  However, about 500 stamps were inadvertently sent to eight customers.

Spokesperson Richard McLean says while it is a fortunate error for the customers, it is a regrettable situation.

He says New Zealand Post is urging those who ordered the stamps to return them, but says it is unlikely this will happen.

The stamps are attracting offers from collectors of upwards of $500 per stamp and are predicted to eventually sell for far more.
