Monty Betham

League player turned boxer
Age:  28

Monty Betham has just quit professional rugby league after nearly a decade in a career which saw him captain the Warriors, play over 100 NRL and Super League games, pull on the Kiwi jersey for eight test matches and captain the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats in England.

But he's not leaving sport behind - he's following in the footsteps of his famous father into a professional boxing career. Monty Betham Snr, who won a slew of New Zealand, Australasian, and Commonwealth boxing titles in the 1970s and 1980s will be his son's new coach.

Monty and his wife, Jaymie, celebrated the birth of their first child soon after the hardman returned home from Treasure Island.

In the end, Monty says, you can't just rely on physical skill on the show.

"I think brains is more important than brawn, because if you don't have a method or a process, you won't have an outcome. You have to listen and make sure you have a clear understanding of the rules."
