Female singer songwriters and alternative rockers are among New Zealand's best musicians this year.
But the best of the best is the roots dub band Fat Freddy's Drop, topping the charts two years in a row and selling over 100,000 records with no marketing or advertising.
Based on a True Story is NZ's highest selling album for the second year running - a seven times platinum year.
Other music to appeal to Kiwis this year includes Brooke Fraser's musical ode to a Rwandan orphan - Albertine; Bic Runga's album Birds; the Mint Chicks; the Bleeders and Spacifix.
Dave Dobbyn was 2006 male artist of the year.
