A Wellington film director's debut feature has been picked up by a major United States production and distribution company that has launched many Hollywood careers.

Taika Waititi's Eagle Vs Shark is a quirky comedy that was written by Waititi at the prestigious Sundance Institute. It has been picked up by Miramax.

The film starring Loren Horsley and Jermaine Clement is a love story of sorts. The film tells the tale of two socially awkward misfits and the strange ways they try to find love. The title comes from the favourite animals of the two main characters Lilly and Jarrod.

Eagle Vs Shark is due to be released later this year.

Waititi's short film Two Cars, One Night was nominated for an Oscar in 2005.

Miramax, who is behind some of the world's biggest commercial films, made the announcement from the Cannes Film Festival.
