NZ third in world for car ownership

A new study reveals just how much New Zealanders love their cars.

The 2006 Panorama study published by The Nielsen Company says car penetration in New Zealand ranks third in the world, with 82% of people owning a car.

The United States is ranked first with nine in 10 Americans claiming to own a car. Saudi Arabia is second with 86%. Across the ditch in Australia 70% of people own a car.

Kiwis car ownership is also reflected in a recent study that showed New Zealanders are among the lowest users of public transport in the world. It found only 56% of Kiwis use public transport to get to work, ranking us 22nd out of 28 countries.
