The world's most famous sheep is back making news.
Two-and-a-half years after being shorn live on television, Shrek
has lost another long woolly coat. But this time he underwent
the big clip atop one of the icebergs floating off the South
Island's east coast.
At 100 kilometres off the Dunedin coast there were no yards or dogs, just lots and lots of ice and a carpet so Shrek and his blade shearer didn't slip.
Owner John Periam put the central Otago merino back onto the world stage for a good cause. "It's actually Shrek's birthday today so that's pretty special and he hasn't been shorn for two-and-a-half years so it's time we had another haircut."
The last haircut attracted international interest after Shrek had spent six years roaming wild in the hills. He has since become an icon for the wool industry and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.
His latest clip is all about rekindling interest in Shrek. Selling his fleece will add to the thousands of dollars this iceberg shearing has already raised for CureKids.
However the iceberg factor had everyone nervous.
The crew had only just landed when a huge chunk of ice broke off,
stretching the nerves.
The SPCA is calling the venture exploitive and disgusting, but Shrek who has flown in helicopters many times appeared unfazed.
