The name of a prominent Northland man charged with serious assault on his partner has been suppressed for the duration of his trial.
The man is defending 11 charges including sexual violation, injuring with intent and threatening to kill.
The Crown prosecutor said evidence will be given that in early 2004 when the woman had breast cancer, the man had knocked her down and then tried to choke her.
He said last January when the man found the woman in bed with another couple, he dragged her off by the hair and assaulted her.
The man's lawyer said the defence will be that the allegations are a string of lies and that the woman has set out to destroy her ex-partner.
