Alpine trampers are being warned to prepare for dangerous conditions following another death on a South Island mountain.

A 34-year-old Christchurch man died when he fell 60 metres in Mount Aspiring National Park near Queenstown.

It's the fifth fatal mountaineering accident in two days.

Craig Justin Cameron fell to his death while he was climbing the Cascade Saddle near Mount Aspiring.

He was being guided by his wife, a more experienced climber.

Trampers raised the alarm but bad weather has prevented search and rescue teams from recovering his body.

Police say the area is covered in snow and it appears the pair didn't have the proper equipment.

The death is another blow to the mountaineering industry in the South Island and came just a day after four climbers lost their lives in an avalanche on Mount Tasman.

Some are now questioning whether our mountains are worth the risk for recreational climbers.

Police too say the dangers of alpine areas should never be underestimated.
