Bus driver escapes burning vehicle

  • One dead in car, bus crash

An Auckland bus driver had a lucky escape, getting out of the vehicle moments before it was engulfed by fire.

The bus was travelling through the suburb of Meadowbank on Monday morning when the driver noticed flames coming out the back.

Smoke from the burning bus could be seen 20 kilometres away as the fire quickly spread.

When firemen arrived, flames were reaching the top of a nearby house which fire officers say was lucky not to catch alight.

Fire safety investigators are investigating the cause of the blaze.
