The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it's still deciding whether New Zealand should help North Korea pay for its oil imports.
The payment would be a reward for the country's cooperation with six-party talks aimed at dissuading North Korea from going nuclear.
Japan has bowed out of the negotiations due to a dispute over the abduction of its nationals by North Korean agents, but China, South Korea, Russia and the US are still chewing over the idea.
An MFAT spokesman says no firm timetable has been set for the talks or any possible energy aid.
It is thought North Korea could be in line for up to 200,000 tonnes of fuel per year.
NZ would, along with Australia, be making up the shortfall from Japan's withdrawal. Australia has been reported as saying it was prepared to take over Japan's share in providing energy aid.
