A sickness beneficiary has been charged with the murder of Austin Hemmings.

The charges against a 45-year-old man from Otahuhu have been upgraded at his second appearance in Auckland District Court.

Police say Hemmings was stabbed while trying to help a woman being attacked in central Auckland last month.

The accused man, with name suppression, was initially charged with male assaults female.

That has now been withdrawn and replaced with one charge of murder ad one charge of assault relating to the woman.

He has been remanded in custody until next month.
