The agonising over the future of Eden Park may be over but now it is Dunedin's turn.
The city has to decide whether to spend nearly $200 million on a new, roofed Carisbrook. But unlike Auckland there will be no handout from the government.
Carisbrook Stadium Trust wants to build a permanent clear roof over the stadium which would take up to 30,000 spectators.
The plan incorporates Otago University teaching facilities.
"It's going to cost a lot of money but the benefits for the city are tenfold and in the long run I think it is a fantastic opportunity that we need to embrace," says Highlanders captain Josh Blackie.
Dunedin City ratepayers would need to find up to $85 million with the Otago Regional Council picking up the rest.
Mayor Peter Chin says visions always cost and involve sacrifice.
"It's a question of how to manage that," says Chin.
But the city's small ratepayers association is opposed, saying it's far too much for a city the size of Dunedin.
The Otago Rugby Union finished last year $1 million in the red but it believes a new Carisbrook could turn round its finances.
If approved the new Carisbrook will be finished in time for the 2011 rugby world cup.
