Southland shearers have worked their way into the record books, setting a new world record for shearing a ewe and a lamb.

The news was big for Tuatapere, which is home to some of the fastest shearers in the world. Nine of the best were gunning for the record time for shearing a ewe on saturday

The time to beat was 42 seconds, set in Australia last year.

And the first sheep of the day set the pace, done and dusted in just 35 seconds.

The remaining shearers all had a go, but after the fleece was weighed to check it reached a minimum 30 kilograms, the day's first attempt couldn't be beaten.

Shane Harvey is now the official world speed shearing champion and he was pretty relaxed about it all.

"It was quite a good sheep it sat for me it just hit it, and it worked really," says Harvey.
