Related Articles 2008 Attitude Awards Winners

The Inaugural Attitude Awards are being held on December 3 - World Disability Day and broadcast on TV ONE on December 7 at 10.30pm.

The Attitude Awards, a fantastic new initiative dedicated to honour the outstanding achievements of New Zealanders living with disabilities is launching in December.

It's the first year for these Awards and they are looking to become the equivalent of the Halberg Awards.

The winners in each category of the Attitude Awards and an overall Supreme Award winner will be announced at a black tie event at the Sky City Convention Centre on December 3, coinciding with World Disability Day.

Categories include the Attitude Sportsman and Sportswoman, Enterprise, Arts, Youth, Community, Spirit and ACC Employer Awards.

Judging by the line up of the sponsors who have got behind it first time up and the list of celebrities attending on the night, these Awards are set to become an annual affair.

The awards came about after presenter and associate producer Curtis Palmer pitched the idea to Attitude producer Robyn Scott-Vincent (RSVP Productions). The awards have involved the entire production team and come together over just 10 months.

Palmer says he is excited the idea is taking flight.

"We want to celebrate young disabled people who are inspirational, people in our communities who contribute to making the life of a disabled person richer, our 'outside' artists, disabled entrepreneurs and the employers who help disabled people achieve successful working lives," says Palmer.

The Awards

The awards are:

• Attitude Enterprise Award - This award aims to recognise an individual, team, organisation or company whose activities, innovation and achievements have improved the lives of persons with a disability and/or their families.
• Attitude Sportsman Award - will be awarded to the athlete whose level of achievement in 2008 represented excellence in sport at the highest level.
• Attitude Sportswoman Award - will be awarded to the athlete whose level of achievement in 2008 represented excellence in sport at the highest level.
• Attitude Youth Award - recognises and rewards outstanding young New Zealanders with a disability aged 12 to 24 years
• Attitude Employer Award - will be awarded to an organization that demonstrates their support, commitment & innovative approaches to employees with disabilities throughout their organisation
• Attitude Community Award - will be awarded for the outstanding contribution made by an individual (either from an organization or from within a family) to a member or members of the disability community of New Zealand
• Attitude Arts Award - will be awarded for outstanding achievement in the arts.
