A Wellington secondary school student is being told to remove his Movember moustache or be banned from NCEA exams.

Scots College principal Graeme Yule says the 18-year-old is breaching the private school's appearance guidelines.

He says the teenager will not be allowed to sit his level three exams if he turns up unshaven.

Yule says people attending the school know they have signed up for certain values and a unique type of education.

He says the student could make arrangements with the Qualifications Authority to sit his exams elsewhere.
