ONE News Health Correspondent Lorelei Mason brings you the
exclusive story of Christchurch baby, Tristan Thornton.
Tristan suffers from a rare genetic immune disease called Di George
Syndrome and the tiniest bug could kill him. His is a very risky
variety of the disease which only 1%of Di George patients share. He
has no thymus, a tissue which grows t-cells which are vital for the
body to develop immunity. It is that he is off to the United States
to receive. A baby there needs life saving heart surgery in which
part of his thymus is removed - it is that thymus that Tristan will
receive.
Without treatment Tristan would not live to see his first
birthday.
