Helen Clark is still ahead in the preferred Prime Minister stakes, but her party is firmly stuck in second place as National extends its lead over Labour in the latest ONE News Colmar Brunton poll.

National has continued its upward trend to sit on 49% support, ten points ahead of labour on 39%, while the Greens are holding strong in third place on 6%.

But National's strength has not been at the expense of Labour.

The trend shows Labour's support is holding while the smaller parties are struggling. The Maori Party and New Zealand First both on 2% support and Act and United Future are both on one.

National's dynamic has reason to smile at the state of their party's support but Helen Clark is still the preferred Prime Minister.

Clark is on 37% - up five points since the last poll. National leader John Key is holding steady on 29%. And Foreign Minister Winston Peters is one the wane with just 3% of those polled believing he should have the top job.

The ONE News Colmar Brunton poll sampled 1,000 eligible voters and has a margin of error of 3.1%.
