Don't expect balmy weather to kick off the new year.

The unpredictable rain and cold snaps New Zealand has felt in December will continue right through to January 2007.

MetService Forecaster Allister Gorman says the muggy weather of Christmas Day will disappear later in the week and in the run up to New Year there will be another cold burst.

Gorman says hot summer days will be popping up from time to time early in 2007.
