Travellers are being asked to help stop the spread of the varroa bee mite these holidays.

The scourge of honey bees is widespread in the North Island and contained in Nelson.

Varroa Agency Incorporated chairman Duncan Butcher fears bees may hitch rides in cars, and travel from the North to the South Island.  He is asking people have a quick check in their cars before getting on the ferry, or leaving the Nelson area.

Butcher says stopping the movement of bees is still the best defence in stopping further outbreaks in the South Island.
