The Hutt Valley tattoo artist whose work has been linked to at least three severe infections has agreed to stop work until health officials complete an urgent investigation.

In the most serious case, a man in his 20s contracted the flesh eating disease necrotising fasciitis and lost a quarter of his body tissue during emergency surgery at Hutt Hospital.

He remains seriously ill.

Wellington Medical Officer of Health Margot McLean says they have carried out an initial infection control process and they are now starting a full investigation, which will involve going through every aspect of the tattooist's work systematically.

She says that could take weeks and the tattooist has agreed not to work until that is complete.

The Labour Department is also investigating.
