Kiwi scientists could be a step closer to uncovering the secret to ridding the body of cancer.
A research team at Christchurch School of Medicine has found compounds from vegetables like broccoli and Brussel sprouts help kill cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy.
Lead researcher, Dr Mark Hampton, says large amounts of the protein Bcl-2 make some cancer cells resistant to treatment. But he says the compound from cruciferous vegetables helps makes them more susceptible.
Hampton says he now wants to know how the compound works inside the cell to negate the power of the protein.
He says they could then use that information to design new drugs.
