The number of people getting free diabetes checks has doubled in the last five years but Health Minister Pete Hodgson is hoping the figure improves further.

In 2001 34, 037 New Zealanders with diabetes were enrolled for annual check-ups. By last year the number was 70,456.

But Hodgson says the target for the end of this year is 85,000 enrolments, given estimates that 200,000 people have the disease.

He says as well as targeting those who already have the disease, more work needs to be done to prevent the growth in Type 2 diabetes, by encouraging people to get better nutrition and more exercise.
