Auckland police are describing a man, who may be responsible for the attempted kidnappings of two school girls, as a "predator."

A 14-year-old was abducted on her way to Western Springs College on Friday morning, but managed to escape.

Two hours earlier, a 17-year-old walking to the same school was threatened.

Police say the location and the descriptions of the man involved suggest the two incidents may be linked.

Detective Sergeant Glenn Baldwin says parents and members of the public are concerned - with good reason - and young girls in the area should be extra vigilant with their personal security.

He says the man is a predator and needs to be caught sooner rather than later.

The offender is described as a male Caucasian, aged in his mid 20s to early 30s and of wiry or skinny build.

The car is described as a dirty dark grey older model four-door sedan - possibly a Honda Vigor or Accord.

Baldwin says anyone with knowledge of the man should call police immediately.
