Handbag incident dismays NZRU

Published: 11:20AM Wednesday May 31, 2006 Source: RNZ

The Rugby Union says it runs programmes to educate players about appropriate off-field behaviour - but in the end it has to treat them like adults.

The comments come after All Black flanker Chris Masoe was fined $3,000 over an incident in a Christchurch bar, following Saturday's Super 14 final.

He punched a fellow patron and was then hit in the face with a handbag by former All Blacks skipper and Hurricanes teammate Tana Umaga who intervened.

The union says the episode is dismaying.
