A spectacular end to the Rugby Sevens world series in
New Zealand's outside chance of taking a seventh sevens world series title has become reality with a 34-5 win over Samoa in the final.
Fiji only had to beat Wales in the quarter-finals to secure the title but they lost 21-14.
Fiji's win in the plate final left New Zealand needing the final win to go to 130 points to take the overall series - a script that could've been commissioned by Disney such was the potential feel-good factor.
Despite the 34-5, six try to one scoreline, New Zealand went on to win a bruising encounter which still required plenty of rugged defence, visionary linking and incisive running to fend off the Samoans.
Captain DJ Forbes has paid tribute to the team's resilience and the impact of the OE contingent.
He says there was always a cheer if they made a big tackle or scored a try and it really lifts the team, especially when a player is down injured.
