A judge is being urged to come down hard on two men who have admitted a racially motivated attack in Nelson.
A swift and brutal attack on four Korean students came with no warning.
Twenty-eight year-old Harry McCormack told police he didn't like Asians so wanted to hurt them. His accomplice, Bryan Kitto, said he joined in to prove something to his mates.
Police say the pair are skinheads with white supremacist views.
The four victims have name suppression. But other students have come forward, saying racist taunts are nothing new.
Nelson Resident Garvin Maghanoy tells of one incident.
"Me and a few friends were walking around the carpark and there was a few guys that was in a ute went through the carpark and just sort of stuck their head out and yelled out 'you ... Asians, go back to your own country'."
Nelson Student Ollie Evill says he has seen a similar incident.
"We're walking behind them one time and these people drove by and wound down the windows and just abused them threw stuff at them," Evill says.
Normally referred to as the Sunshine City, Nelson is determined to come down hard on crimes of hate.
"The whole community is going to be looking to the judge to throwing down a pretty firm sentence, in the sense that this attack was totally unprovoked," says Nelson MP Nick Smith.
The two men admitted charges of assault and will be sentenced on May 1.
