Four Islamic centres in Auckland were attacked on Saturday night.

The Mt Roskill Mosque in Sandringham, the El Mustafa Mosque and the Al Faraq Cultural Centre in Otahuhu and the New Zealand Muslim Association Mosque in Ponsonby were vandalised.

Windows were broken, a door smashed in and graffiti sprayed on the buildings.

Prime Minister Helen Clark said she's saddened by the attacks which she assumes are a reaction to the London bombings.

She said New Zealand's Muslim community is peaceful and law abiding and it's wrong to single them out for retaliation.

The attacks come two days after four bombs were detonated on the London underground and on a bus.

There have been 49 confirmed fatalities, while concerns remain for a further 25 missing people. At least 700 were injured.

A claim for the attacks has been made in the name of al-Qaeda by a group calling itself the Abu Hafs al-Masri brigade. However, investigations are continuing.
