A convicted murderer who has already served a 10-year sentence has taken his case to the Court of Appeal in a rare bid to clear his name.
Rex Haig was convicted in 1995 of murdering a Southland fisherman Mark Roderique following Rodrique's disappearance on a fishing trip in South Westland.
But Haig has always maintained his innocence. He claims it was another crew member, his nephew David Hogan, who murdered him.
According to Haig's lawyer Jonathan Eaton, Hogan confessed to 14 different witnesses that he had shot Rodrique and threw him overboard with the anchor so "he wouldn't come up".
Eaton says the new evidence justifies a new trial.
Three Court of Appeal judges will decide over the next 10 days whether a new trial will be granted.
