The Prostitutes Collective is keen to see a text message service, like that set up for hitchhikers, available through the Vodafone network.
The idea follows concerns over the safety of sex workers in Christchurch, in the wake of three murders last year connected to the sex industry.
Prostitutes Collective spokesperson, Anna Reed, says she has written to Vodafone asking about the possibility of providing a free text messaging service, such as the one run by Telecom.
Telecom's "safe" service allows people to register their whereabouts via text message on a central database.
Reed says most prostitutes she has spoken to use the Vodafone network.
Vodafone says there has been a significant level of interest and they are working towards providing a service similar to Telecom's.
