For most New Zealanders waistlines tend to expand just a little during the festive season.

One News takes a look at the foods most likely to fatten you up and demonstrates how long it will take to work off the calories.

Here's what you need to do to burn off the effects of Christmas:

  • One mince pie equals 20 minutes running on the treadmill.
  • A slice of Christmas cake works out at 25 minutes of striding.
  • Pavlova isn't so bad on its own but factor in the whipped cream and you need a good 40 minutes of rowing.
  • Then there's the alcohol. Each glass of wine equals about 15 minutes cycling.
  • And to work off a beer about half an hour of pumping iron.
