The Attorney General has qaushed an arrest warrant issued for a visiting Israeli general.
An Auckland District Court judge issued the warrant against Moshe Ya'alon, Israel's former Defence Force Chief of Staff.
Palestinian activists accuse him of playing key role in the 2002 assassination of a Hamas leader in Gaza City - an attack which killed more than 20 people
Attorney General Michael Cullen says advice from the Crown Law Office was that there wasn't enough evidence to support a prosecution.
Cullen's office says no other country is seeking Ya'alon's arrest and there has been no request from the International Criminal Court
The government is disavowing having any contact with Ya'alon or his government.
Cullen says there has been no contact at any level between his office, or Crown Law, and the Israeli Embassy or government on the matter.
He also says to his knowledge no government official, minister, or MP, has met with Ya'alon.
The woman who brought court action against Ya'alon is horrified the District Court judge's decision to issue an arrest warrant has been overruled.
Palestine Human Rights Campaigner Janfrie Wakim, who made the application, says Cullen's actions are appalling and will damage New Zealand's international reputation.
Wakim says Cullen has lacked the political courage to stand up
for victims whose lives have been so afflicted.
