An Auckland woman's near fatal heart attack has prompted a warning for people using a popular slimming pill.
Researchers in New Zealand believe Reductil is potentially harmful to anyone with an irregular heart rhythm called Long QT Syndrome.
They have now published their findings in Britain.
More than 17,000 New Zealanders have used the drug to shed weight.
"Sibutramine, or Reductil, can block the potassium channels in the heart cells," said research co-author Dr Jonothan Skinner.
"It's these very potassium channels which are already in trouble in people with Long QT Syndrome."
Researchers recommend a thorough heart check, including genetic tests, before using Reductil.
