New Zealand money is being poured into Papua New Guinea in a bid to stop an Aids epidemic spreading across the Pacific.

It's estimated 65,000 people already have the potentially deadly virus, which PNG leaders fear could wipe out much of the population.

Aids experts are blaming the health crisis on poverty.

In Port Moresby, many turn to prositution in an attempt survive.

Gertrude, a sex worker, knows she works in one of the most dangerous cities in the world, but sometimes the enemy is who you'd least suspect.

"Police ask the females to go out and have sex with them, and when they refuse that's when they start belting them and chasing them," says Gertrude.

But the biggest enemy for these sex workers is a hidden one - Aids.

The disease is decimating Papua New Guinea.

Gertrude and others like her come from Port Moresby settlements, where 40% of the population live in poverty.

"People have no food for their family, people struggle to buy a coffin to bury their dead loved ones. It is a big problem in a country where there are no social services," says PNG cabinet minister Dame Carol Kidu.

That's why crime rates are soaring in a city where those who can afford to live behind razor wire.

But Gertrude and her friends have been given their own kind of sanctuary.

Poro Sopot is a drop-in centre for sex workers.

In exchange for free access to washing and cooking facilities, the workers learn about protecting themselves, and in turn pass the message on.

"We are helping the people of Papua New Guinea by asking them to have safe sex," says Gertrude.

It is one of a number of projects New Zealand puts aid money into, in the hope it may make a difference.

For people like Gertrude, it could mean the difference between life and death.
