Catholics at a prayer vigil in Auckland on Wednesday night to protest against an episode of the cartoon series, South Park, say they will continue to boycott broadcaster CanWest.

They are disappointed with the company's decision for its C4 channel to show the episode depicting a statue of the Virgin Mary menstruating.

As the programme went to air, the 300-strong crowd held Rosary beads and crosses and prayed outside CanWest's headquarters in Mt Eden.

Brendan Malone, whose group Family Life International set up a protest website, says CanWest has shown no respect for religious beliefs and some Catholics will continue to boycott its stations and advertisers.

CanWest says it screened the Virgin Mary episode seven weeks earlier than planned so that people could judge it more accurately.

The Catholic Church is pushing ahead with a formal Broadcasting Standards Authority complaint.
