Auckland Hospital is warning we have not seen the last of a potentially deadly superbug which has been causing major headaches in the wards.

Ten patients remain in isolation in the hospital on Monday as doctors try to stop the spread of the bug vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE).

VRE was first detected at the hospital two months ago.

Around 1,000 patients have been screened and 33 people have now been identified as carriers.

But so far only three people have been infected and the Auckland District Health Board says there have been no deaths from VRE.

VRE is caused by a common bowel bacteria that is highly contagious and fatal to those who are ill or have a low immune system.

Test results due on Monday on patients at Auckland Hospital will reveal the extent of the outbreak.

All patients being admitted to the hospital will be screened for the bug to try to halt its spread.
