The man accused of killing the German backpacker Birgit Brauer a month ago entered no plea at his second appearance in New Plymouth's District Court.

Michael Wallace is charged with murdering and kidnapping Brauer.

He is also accused of stealing and dishonestly using two vehicles, as well as perverting the course of justice by giving the police a false name a day before the killing.

The court also heard briefly of two drink-driving charges in New Plymouth and Blenheim, and other driving charges. No details were given.

Wallace will next appear in a month.
