Police Commissioner Rob Robinson has received a speeding ticket for travelling 27 kilometres an hour above the speed limit.

Robinson was on his way to a family function with some of his relations when he was stopped by an officer in a 70 kph zone near Oamaru.

The Office of the Commissioner says the officer recognised Robinson immediately and issued him a ticket for $230.

Robinson says that he missed a speed limit sign in an area where the limit changed from 100 kph to 70. He was detected travelling at 97 kph.

The commisioner says he was "gutted to have been so stupid" and regretted putting one of his staff in the position of having to issue an infringement to the top serving police officer. It is his first speeding ticket in 40 years of driving.

Robinson announced earlier this week that he is stepping down from the position of Police Commissioner at the end of the year.
