Serbian government denies arrest

Reports that the former Bosnian Serb military commander and war crimes suspect General Ratko Mladic has been arrested have been denied by the Serbian government and the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague.

Mladic was indicted in 1995 for genocide over the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War and for orchestrating the massacre of eight thousand Muslims at Srebrenica.

There have been sweeping reports, and rumours continue in Serbia, that the 63 year old fugitive is now being held at a secure location and is negotiating terms of his surrender.

The reports come as Serbia's European Union membership prospects come up for review, and  many believe the EU's decision could be influenced by Mladic's arrest and handover to the war crimes authorities.
