A cruise ship has been refloated after running aground onto sand at the Isle of Pines in the south of New Caledonia on Sunday.

The Pacific Sky was refloated on Monday morning and is being examined at the Isle of Pines anchorage.

P&O Cruises Australia says the ship and passengers were never in any danger.

Pacific Sky departed Brisbane on Thursday on a nine night South Pacific cruise with 1289 passengers and 615 crew on board.

Maritime authorities in Noumea said the ship suffered engine problems in calm conditions. Police divers checked the 240-metre long vessel and found it suffered no damage.
