Beach goers are not the only ones welcoming the return of the sun this week.
A little bit of sunshine means that three determined Christchurch engineers will be able to test run a prototype of their new brainchild.
Their solar car is capable of more than 120kph on the open road and is a contender for this year's 3000-km world solar challenge from Darwin to Adelaide.
