Sunday is World Suicide Prevention Day, and Progressive leader Jim Anderton says the forgotten victims of suicide tend to be family members and friends.

He lost a daughter to suicide but he hopes by raising awareness he can stop others from having to go through the same ordeal.

Anderton says Sunday is a day to offer support to those who have lost loved ones.

He says he knows from personal experience that it makes a huge difference to know you have got people to turn to.

"Families of suicide victims might look like they're holding up pretty well, but it's a fact that they're very much at risk of suicide themselves."

He says one family in his electorate saw three children take their own lives, one after the other.
