An Auckland car dealer has been convicted of breaching the Fair Trading Act after offering customers what appeared to be a free flight to Australia in exchange for buying a car.
The Tower Motor Group was prosecuted by the Commerce Commission and has been fined $15,000. Tower also agreed to pay $1,000 to each of three customers who were affected.
The promotion was deemed misleading because customers found that they had to pay inflated rates for their accommodation in order to qualify for the deal.
The commission says it is also prosecuting the promoter of the flights, which more than 50 New Zealand businesses have been offering.
