An Auckland pilot who survived skin cancer has taken to a jet of a different kind to take the slip, slop, slap message around the country.

Jeremy Burfoot and his friend Brad Burton are jetskiing around New Zealand with the aim of raising awareness about melanoma.

Burfoot, a 747 captain, now religiously covers up in the sun and he thinks the rest of New Zealand should too.

"I had a melanoma, about five months ago, removed and that was a direct result of sunbathing too much when I was younger... and I just can't recommend people enough to be careful with the sun."

It was the second time the melanoma had come back so Burfoot and Burton suited up to spread the word.

The journey will cover 4,000 kilometres and will navigate some of the most dangerous waters in the world.

"We have GPS trackers in the skis so that people can see where we are at any time and... we've got these little emergency beacons that satellites can pick up if we set them off."

The journey is expected to take three weeks.
