The Sunday Star-Times may face legal action over documents it published that were obtained from Archives New Zealand.
The Sunday Star-Times was granted permission to see private papers belonging to late Prime Minister David Lange, and published a report revealing New Zealand spying in 1985.
Archives New Zealand chief executive Dianne Macaskill says an administrative error led to the report being included in the papers released to the newspaper. She says the Sunday Star-Times had no authority to access or print the information and she has written to the newspaper rescinding permission to publish it.
The Sunday Star-Times says the information is already in the public arena and Archives New Zealand can't stop it publishing what has already been released.
