Drivers using Auckland's Northern Motorway's southbound lanes faced long delays on Saturday morning.
A truck carrying a digger hit an overbridge at the Esmonde Road interchange on Friday, blocking off one lane.
Traffic was returning to normal on Auckland's Northern motorway by Saturday morning, with a span of the old Onewa Road bridge now reduced to rubble.
The Transport Agency says work is now complete ahead of schedule, and all the motorway lanes have been opened to traffic.
Transit's acting operations manager Mark Walker says crews worked through the night to demolish the bridge, and clear the road.
He is very happy with the way the crews worked to get the work done quickly.
Walker says he apologises to the public for any inconvenience, and thanks motorists for their patience.
But the news of long delays for drivers is frustrating for the North Shore's mayor, who says the incident has caused unnecessary havoc across the region.
Andrew Williams says he wants a signaling system installed on the Auckland Harbour Bridge to warn trucks which are too high.
Williams says an alternative option for crossing the harbour is also needed, such as a tunnel.
