Trampers are being urged to take the time to sign the book at DOC huts, after the search for a missing man was hampered by a lack of travel details.

An Auckland man became stranded by rising waters in the Kaimanawa Ranges this week and had to wait six days for help.

Police spokeswoman Kris McGehan says many trampers think they don't need to make entries in the books if they aren't staying in the huts overnight.

She says it is essential entries are made so if there is an emergency, searchers can track movements quickly and easily.
