A number of high profile court cases will go under the microscope on Wednesday in a conference to look at wrongful convictions.

The Innocence Project, a group run by Otago and Victoria Universities, is bringing together international experts in the field in Wellington.

Psychologist and key speaker Matthew Gerrie says the project is looking at several current cases with the idea of taking them on.

One of them is likely to be the Scott Watson case.

Gerrie says there are issues in that case that require some form of attention and they will be looking at the kinds of things that may have gone wrong in those cases - if anything has gone wrong at all.

He also says increasing numbers of cases in New Zealand are being overturned.

The main causes are eye witness error, invalid scientific evidence, and false confessions.

The Christchurch civic creche case was also an interesting case, says Gerrie.

If scientific best practice had been adhered to, the outcome may have been different, he adds.
